The International Service Committee works to raise money and awareness for a variety of international charities.  Additionally, help is given to individuals who approach Stourbridge Rotary Club for assistance in funding their overseas enterprises.

The International Committee usually meets six times per year.  It has good support with about a dozen Rotarians in attendance.  The meetings have two main strands; discussion of projects that need support, and methods of raising finance in order that the club can offer that support.

The following charities received donations during the year 2008-9: Leonard Cheshire; School 4 all in Africa, £200; Women’s Sewing Centre at Buwundo, Uganda, £400; Aquabox, two boxes at £250 each; Shelterbox, two boxes at £490 each; Hardship Fund at Malamulo Hospital, Malawi, £200: Kurunegala Hospital, Sri Lanka; funds to assist the hospital to purchase medical supplies to deal with the refugee crisis, £300

Shoe Boxes; club members together with pupils at The Ridge Primary School filled 100 boxes with household goods and items for teenagers and children.  These are on their way to help people in such countries as Bulgaria and Moldova in eastern Europe.

The club collects unwanted items that can be of use to charities.  Thus old spectacles are forwarded to ‘Vision Aid Overseas’.  Redundant mobile phones raise cash for ‘Water Aid’

As mentioned above, as well as deciding which good causes to support, the International Committee also raises some of the money that is given.  Thus, in February a Cheese and Wine evening took place.  This raised over £560. At the end of June a Strawberries and Champagne event is due to take place in the garden of one our members.

An outline programme for 2009-10 has been agreed.  The charities that will be considered for support include Motivation, which provides low cost wheelchairs, Save a Child’s Heart, which organises cardiac surgery for children, Send a Cow which funds animals in Africa.  Events to raise cash to help pay for this programme will include a Barn Dance, an evening of gentle swing featuring the Archie Cotterell Trio and singer Carole Westwood, plus ‘Four Hands, Four Courses’, a culinary evening with music.
